Cyclone 24 at Derby Velodrome

Cyclone 24 is the UK’s only 24 hour velodrome challenge event series. Bringing the ultimate cycling endurance challenge where teams of 6 riders battle physical exhaustion and mental fatigue, as they take to the velodrome track in rotation to relay cycle non stop for 24 hours.  Basicly...just keep turning left.

Teams made up with colleagues, clients, friends enter the unknown, push boundaries and see what can be achieved!

Cyclone24 East Midlands at Derby Velodrome.

Derby Arena boasts a 250m track and has already been ridden by some of the world’s top cyclists including Sir Bradley Wiggins, Dame Sarah Storey, Mark Cavendish and Ed Clancy to name but a few.

But for 24hrs it was host to Cyclone 24. Now in its forth year and slowly gaining momentum as it curcumnavigates the UK Velodromes such as Manchester ,Carmarthen and Newport in Wales.

Derby Velodrome/Arena found 19 teams doing battle as the event started noon Saturday. The pace was quick from the outset as the first 20 riders took to the track with Derby institute of Sport setting the pace from the word go. At 6 hours Team DIS with relentless pace set a new Cyclone24 record of fastest lap, with 14.37 shedding a whole second of the previous record of 15.36. Meanwhile the team from the Derbyshire Constabulary were top of the Corporate Cup leaderboard with a healthy lead of 64 laps.

At the the half way marker (12Hours) there was a mid table competition brewing with RA Tech UK (a team of transplant recipients), Team Anaesthesia and Walsall Roads CC all on 1620 laps and riding together in a group! In the corporate cup challenge, Derbyshire Constabulary were still out on front, but Faithful & Gould, BWB Consulting and the Radiology Rollers were all battling it out between them. And cyclones first ever tandem team had clocked up an amazing 1545 laps and were sitting in 13th position due to some very quick pedling cobinations from both pilot and stoker.

During the night the pace settled as some team members tried to get some downtime before thier stint. At 4am the top of the leaderboard had changed a little, no signs of shifting the DIS boys off the top spot, however, Wymeswold CC had moved up to second and were sitting on 2611, Rogue Resolution were in third on 2589 (on just 4 riders) with PKF Cooper Parry just laps behind on 2583. There was also some healthy competition going on between Prime Accountants and Mitie/Rolls Royce who were on 2070 and 2062 respectively,

The pace once again heated up as only 6 hrs to go. Several trying personal bests lap times and possibbly a shot at the lap record but that was safe with weary legs setting in

Final figures of the Derby Arena challenge saw teams amass 66,468 velodrome laps, an outstanding 10,325 miles.
The podium was certainly very ‘local’ with the team from Derbyshire Institute of Sport, who covered 4169 laps, taking the top spot and the team from Derbyshire Constabulary claiming the Corporate Cup, covering 3759 laps and the award for best team kit went to RA Tech UK.

The Derby event has certainly set the pace; the top four teams on the leaderboard all went over the existing laps record with PKF Cooper Parry finishing on 3912, Wymeswold CC on 3896 and Rogue Resolutions on 3839 and every team went over 3000 laps which is a first for Cyclone24!

The Cylone 24 event is the brainchild of Zoe Westerman. A self confessed latecomer to track cycling herself who has worked in developing the event that has raised over £120,000 for charities and has gained sponsorship from Stills creative consultants.
